The holiday season is all about being festive and making spirits bright. If you are a nurse or healthcare worker however, it can be an extremely busy and overwhelming time. Quality time with loved ones is often sacrificed for lengthy hospital shifts with high patient volumes amid continual staff shortages. Just because you are working doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the holidays though.
Here are a few ways to boost morale across your unit during the holiday season:
1. Decorate
Adding decorations like string lights or garland to the nurses’ stations or bulletin areas is sure to lift spirits, creating a warm and festive environment for staff and visitors.
2. Organize a Potluck
Potlucks are always a hit around the holidays. It is a perfect opportunity to share cuisine and ensure that everyone has a nice, hot meal for the holiday. If potlucks aren’t your thing (and we understand), try using an app to order takeout instead.
3. Secret Santa
Whether you call it a Secret Santa, White Elephant, or Pollyanna, a gift exchange can be a nice way of showing appreciation to your peers.
4. Spread Cheer to Patients
Being hospitalized is not easy, especially around the holidays. We can’t forget the fact that patients can feel lonely and may not always have anyone to visit them. Brighten their day with cards, gifts, and warm wishes.
5. Wear Festive Attire
Spread holiday cheer through your attire. If permitted, try wearing holiday-themed scrubs, socks, headbands or hats.
