Responsibilities
Assessing Patients: RNs conduct comprehensive assessments of patients, including collecting and analyzing data about their medical history, symptoms, and current condition. They perform physical examinations, review test results, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to gather information.
Developing Care Plans: Based on their assessments, RNs develop individualized care plans for patients. These plans outline the nursing interventions, treatments, and goals to address the patient's needs and promote their health and well-being. RNs collaborate with the healthcare team to create comprehensive care plans.
Administering Medications: RNs are responsible for administering medications to patients, ensuring the correct dosages and routes of administration. They verify medication orders, monitor patients for any adverse reactions or side effects, and provide education on medication management to patients and their families.
Performing Medical Procedures: RNs perform various medical procedures as part of patient care. This may include starting intravenous (IV) lines, administering injections, inserting catheters, assisting with diagnostic tests, managing ventilators, and providing wound care. They ensure that procedures are performed safely and accurately.
Monitoring and Observing Patients: RNs continuously monitor patients' vital signs, observe their physical and emotional status, and assess their responses to treatments and interventions. They identify changes in the patient's condition and promptly communicate any concerns to the healthcare team.
Providing Patient Education: RNs educate patients and their families about their medical conditions, treatment options, and self-care techniques. They provide information on medication management, diet and exercise, symptom management, and preventive measures. They ensure that patients understand their healthcare plan and empower them to make informed decisions about their health.
Coordinating Care: RNs collaborate with other healthcare professionals to coordinate and manage patient care. They communicate and collaborate with physicians, pharmacists, therapists, social workers, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of care. They participate in interdisciplinary rounds and meetings to discuss patient progress and make care plan adjustments.
Documenting and Reporting: RNs maintain accurate and detailed patient records, documenting assessments, interventions, medications administered, and changes in the patient's condition. They ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements for record-keeping. They also provide clear and concise reports to the healthcare team during shift changes and handovers.
Adhering to Policies and Protocols: RNs follow established policies, protocols, and standards of care to ensure patient safety and quality outcomes. They maintain infection control practices, adhere to medication administration guidelines, and follow evidence-based practices in nursing.
Advocating for Patients: RNs act as advocates for their patients, ensuring their rights and preferences are respected. They communicate patients' needs and concerns to the healthcare team, collaborate in decision-making, and help patients navigate the healthcare system. They promote patient-centered care and actively engage patients in their own care.
